Grow Grow Grow!

Ever dreamed of long, luscious locks? Or have you ever had a haircut that was just a little too short? Well Lee Stafford is here to help. Following the success of his Hair Growth Treatment, Lee Stafford has created two new products. Hair Growth Shampoo and Conditioner. The duo contains Pro-Growth complex for strength from within, to fertilize the hair follicles and help maximize its potential length.
The duo is designed to stimulate the scalp and balance moisture levels. Hydrolysed Lupine Protein Anelgine proides peptides and trace elements that stimulate and activity of the hair roots.

Lee Stafford notes the following;

"I’ve created my own range of products which I have spent years perfecting! I have been able to put all of my experience into creating fantastic solutions for your hair care and styling needs. Diet, and lifestyle can all affect hair growth, and hair that is harshly treated can break off, making it extremely difficult to grow to an optimum length! If you treat your hair with hair growth shampoo and conditioner, you will get the result you want with its Pro-Growth complex for strength from within, to fertilize your follicles and help hair grow to its maximum potential length."

Lee Stafford Hair Growth Trio

I have been trying this duo for a month and can say that my hair has felt softer, smoother, and healthier. The shampoo and certainly nourished my hair, while the conditioning treatment has smoothed the ends of my hair. Apple and Lemon Extracts have added shine to my often dull blonde hair, while Green Tea Extract has been protecting my hair from the elements, as well as the rigorous heat styling I put it through daily.

Now in terms of hair growth, I can say I’ve not seen a huge increase in the length of my hair. Initially, I was very spectacle of the Lee Stafford Hair Growth Range, I have quite a comprehensive understanding of trichology and hair health and know that hair growth goes further that simply using products, treatments and topical formulations.

World leading trichologist Philip Kingsley notes the following on hair growth;

It is possible only to quicken growth by a small percentage at most 10% which considering hair grows 1 - 2 inches a month 6 inches a year, it means quickening by just over half an inch in a year! To do this massage the scalp (kneading) for 2-3 minutes every day.’

Therefore, I think I will be using this for a little longer to be able to see the full effects of the products. Perhaps I’ll have long flowing locks by the beginning of next year!

Nail this Autumn Winter 2011 Trend!

Cruella de Vil the new style icon?  Yep - if Topshop’s autumn/winter 2011 Unique show was anything to go by, the villainous heiress is the style muse to channel this autumn!

So I decided to bring some Disney to my nails using my Barry M Shatter!  I used a white base and then applied the shatter in black over the top and voila – Dalmatian inspired nails!

I absolutely love Barry M’s shatter and cannot wait to try it out in pink!  Will let you know how I get on – but for now I am loving my Dalmatian nails!

Working 9-5

This is not a tribute to Dolly Parton I’m afraid! Working 9-5 is an anti-ageing hydration cream from Laidbare. Laidbare highlights the benefits of every ingredient, with each natural extract defined. Their natural formulas are highly beneficial for all skin types. Laidbare products are developed with out harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients. They are designed to ultimately keep the skin looking healthy and as young and as fresh as possible.

“Nature holds the solution to many common skin problems,” explains Laidbare’s founder and chief ingredients researcher, Sarah Silvester.  “It was my vision to find the best and purest ingredients which nature has to offer and blend them into our formulations so that everyone can benefit from their remarkable skin-benefitting properties.”

Laidbare - Working 9-5

Working 9-5 helps to protect skin around the clock! My mother and I both used it as a primer before make up and found that our foundation lasted longer and our skins looked more ‘hydrated’. Working 9-5 contains extracts of Rose Water to calm, revitalise and soften the skin and anti–ageing Iceland Moss and Gotu Kola to help stimulate collagen production. Although it was wonderfully soft on the skin my mother didn’t find that is was powerful enough for her anti-ageing needs (she is going to kill me for saying that!) However, I felt that my skin was left looking plumper.

Working 9-5 is £7.99 and makes a great daily multi-tasker.

The London Lipstick Collection by Kate

Kate Moss and make-up brand Rimmel are set to celebrate their decade-long partnership - which has seen Kate appear in countless adverts and campaigns for the brand – by Kate launching her first ever beauty line for Rimmel, the London Lipstick Collection By Kate.

Kate's collection, currently available exclusively at Boots but going on nationwide release from 28 September, contains seven shades – all hand-picked by Kate - packaged in chic matte black that Rimmel say represents her 'glamorous rock’n’roll style,' and personalised with the supermodel's signature in vivid red.

Talking about her new lipstick collection Kate says: 'My inspiration for this range was really to create a range of easy to wear, classic shades that I have always worn and loved.'

'From bright reds to soft pinks and nudes, there is a shade for everyone and any occasion. It was also really important for me that they were comfortable to wear.'

'Whatever your outfit there is sure to be a shade to match.'

Steve Mormoris, Senior Vice-President, Global Marketing for Coty Beauty, says 'Kate Moss is the ultimate London girl and truly epitomises the London Look.

'She is a leader in the fashion and beauty stakes and Rimmel is thrilled with our long-standing relationship with the world’s most famous model.

Vidal Sassoon - Part Three

I had the photoshoot yesterday, which was such great fun! I met some fabulous people and had a chance to release my inner glamour puss! I adore my new haircut! Vidal Sassoon really is a true hair god! Ever since having this cut my hair has been 100% easier to style in the morning, despite my hair type being too unruly to really suit this type of cut.  I don’t have to spend ages straightening it with irons, meaning I cut time in the mornings as well as preventing heat damage. I still use an intensive hair mask every week to ensure my hair looks fab at all times, but this means my cut can last longer as the ends don’t look frazzled. My only concern is that with a cut this short, maintenance is imperative, and to be honest I cant really afford Sassoon cuts every month – however, I’m tempted - A Happy Hair Day is priceless! Time to start saving my pennies!

A personal make up tutorial!

Urban Decay’s latest Book of Shadows (Vol. IV) is out and it’s amazing!

Not only does the beautiful pop-up palette contain 16 eyeshadows, a 24/7 Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, Supercurl Curling Mascara and Eyeshadow Primer Potion, it comes with smart-phone-ready ‘Get the Look’ tutorials and a pocket-sized speaker.

You scan the QR (aka “quick response”) codes with your smart phone to instantly download the five video tutorials featuring Wende Zomnir, the creative director of Urban Decay, teaching you how to use every shadow in the kit. Then plug your phone into the mini speaker and rest it in the built-in, two-way cradle (allowing you to watch either vertically or horizontally) located next to the mirror and follow the steps.  It’s like your own personal make up tutorial!

A fabulous addition to any Beauty School Tryout’s make up bag!

Vidal Sassoon - Part Two

Today is the day of the photoshoot. I’m heading down to the Sassoon salon by St Paul’s after lunch. I have been advised to bring some reading material with me to pass the time, as I will be expected to wait around for a few hours while the shoot is taking place. I will also have my make up done by professionals (that reminds me to call my boyfriend for drinks after, I’m not going to waste this fab make over by simply going home after!) Photos to follow.

Vidal Sassoon - Graduated Bob

What makes Vidal Sassoon so different? Isn’t it just a hair cut?

Sassoon believes that great hair design begins with the client. Sassoon studies individual features, characteristics and personal style, applying each cut and colour with careful consideration and precision, creating the ultimate individualised look that's effortlessly sophisticated. The shape of your face. The tone of your skin. The angle of your jaw. Your sense of style. The lines of a Sassoon haircut are like arrows pointing out your best features.

Sassoons method of cutting is unparrelled, and considers every aspect of your hair. Precision cuts are designed to enhance your individual features. High-definition colour complements the shape of your cut. All of this works in synergy so that you can achieve complete control of a look that is easy to recreate day after day.

The design is the most important aspect of a hair cut, Like arrows pointing to your eyes, your smile, your cheekbones, a Sassoon cut and colour accentuates and defines, creating the ultimate expression of you. Vidal Sassoon believes the cut is the style. Sassoon cuts the shape into the hair so that you don't need a lot of styling products to hold hair into a style. So you can shake your head and run your fingers through your hair as often as you like, and your hair will always fall back into shape.

Most importantly Vidal believes that ‘When everything else comes off - your clothes, your jewellery, your makeup - the effortless sophistication and beauty of a Sassoon cut and colour stays with you.’

Nail Art: Part 3

Continuing in my ‘nail art’ lessons, I purchased from Barry M some ‘nail crackle’ in the colour ‘black magic’.  Instant Nail Effects is a simple to use nail paint that creates this amazing effect on your nails in one simple stroke.

You can achieve this amazing effect in 5 simple steps:

  • Apply a clear base coat
  • Apply your chosen colour
  • Apply the Instant Nail Effect
  • Watch while it develops
  • Apply a top coat

I decided to use a bronze colour so I had an almost leopard print effect.  I also found that without the top coat, the Instant Nail effect is a bit dull so by adding a top coat it gave it more of a glossy finish.

Barry M have a tutorial online so you can see for yourself how it works:

Barry M has 6 crackle colours in the range; black magic, pink fizz, blue print, white frost and two new shades; gold glitter and purple rain.

I absolutely love my nail crackle and can’t wait to try and out the black magic with other colour varieties and also try out some of the other crackle shades.  It is a really great way to get ‘wow’ nails pretty quickly and without visiting a nail bar.  One of my friends actually thought I had had my nails professionally done!

I will be sure to keep you updated on how I get on with other colours!

Vidal Sassoon - Part 1

A few weeks back I was asked to model for Vidal Sassoon. That sounds much grander than it actually is. Pharrell, who is taking his practical theory exams at the Vidal Sassoon Academy, asked me. How could I possibly pass up an opportunity of a free cut by a Vidal Sassoon trained stylist, I couldn’t, and when I was told which cut I would be having I was even more excited. The graduated bob – my absolute favourite. Over the past 5 or so years (pre Victoria Beckham's ‘Pob’) I have toiled with this look, going from extremely short to slightly longer long bob style, but always seeming to come back to the classic deep graduation.

Over the next few blog posts I will share with you my before and after pictures (I have to feature in a photo-shoot for Pharrell’s exam portfolio), as well as some history about the great man himself, Vidal Sassoon and how he became such a hair icon.

Vidal Sassoon

Hair History - The Sassoon Way

Vidal Sassoon was a pioneer of on-the-go hair cutting and styling. In the 50’s a visit to the hairdresser was a weekly ritual. Hair was styled by curlers, followed by a prolonged period under the hairdryer hood. The resulting look, often bouffant, was hair sprayed into unwavering stiffness. The 60’s was the year Vidal Sassoon introduced his precision haircutting techniques, turning hairdressers into haircutters, revolutionizing the industry and liberating women with modern, easy to manage hair.  The 80’s were the dawn of the more sophisticated hair colouring techniques and products were developed and colour went mainstream. Sassoon experimented with a wide range of shades and methods, bringing cut and colour into close correspondence.

Today, because of the over saturation of products on the market, hair trends have moved in the direction of over-styling. These looks are not easy to recreate and maintain at home. Sassoon, on the other hand, makes a cut the style. A result, looks don’t wash out after a visit to the salon and are easy to recreate by the client.

AMAZING Eye Shadow INSTANTLY!

Whilst I was away on holiday, I found the most amazing range of products in the local supermarket; Sombra Facil Deliplus.

It is a range of eyes shadows in the different patterns and shadings that you transfer to your eyelids in one movement.
I decided to be daring and purchased the leopard print one; but there were other colours there as well.  I will admit, that I was very sceptical, but decided to give it a go.

You get two sets in each packet and they are what would best be described as soft foam board.  As I couldn’t translate the instructions, I had to figure it out using the pictures on the packet.  But they really were so easy to use!  All you do and line the foam onto your eye where you want the eye shadow to go, press it down on to your eye lid and then remove!  It really is as easy as that and so very quick.

In the packet

I loved the look of the leopard print, but I really wish I had picked up some more colours as well as they are just so great!  And the other colours are great if you aren’t confident at blending your eye shadows.

So if you want amazing eye shadow and pronto, I would highly recommend Sombra Facil Deliplus!

BIG is LUSH

LUSH, that shop that you can smell from a mile off, is known by many for ‘bath bombs’ and homemade soaps and beauty products. In all honesty I haven’t been into a store for many a year as the scent inside is simply too overpowering. However, when I heard of their BIG shampoo I simply had to try it.

BIG shampoo

BIG contains a number of ingredients designed to give your hair exactly what in needs to be as BIG as possible. This pot of mixture contains 50% sea salt to give limp hair the volume. Cleansing the skin with soaps containing salt is an excellent way to benefit from this mineral content. The formula de-greases the skin, removing dead skin cells and dirt. It does this without stripping too much natural oil and leaves the skin soft and conditioned. Salt is softening for the skin and hydrates it. It is full of minerals that help maintain the water balance essential for healthy life processes.

Tooth Wreck Seaweed Infusion helps to soften hair. Seaweeds have been used for their medicinal properties for centuries and are often used to make cough remedies, soothing lotions and cosmetics. This olive-brown seaweed is found at all British coastal areas and around the Irish coasts, too. It grows densely on the seashore; each serrated, strap-like frond is about two centimeters wide and originates from a stalk, anchoring it to the seabed. Toothed wrack seaweed contains large amounts of vitamins, minerals and trace elements, which strengthen the hair. LUSH gather toothed wrack seaweed from Poole harbour and then infuse it in boiled water and add it to the product. Being included in Big shampoo its deliver all the nutrients of the seaweed directly to the hair. This works to soften the hair in combination with the sea salt, which improves the condition of the hair and gives greater volume.

For shine citrus juices are used. Citrus limonum is a thorny, evergreen tree with irregular branches bearing glistening, oval leaves. Its flowers are white and pink-tinged and strongly perfumed, which become the lemon fruit. Lemon infusion works in BIG shampoo to cleanse and degrease the hair. Lemon juice is a source of vitamin C, vitamins B1 and B2, and niacin, and is a powerful antioxidant.

Neroli Oil has an intensely sharp, green and floral aroma, which comes alive when diluted and imparts a refreshing scent. Neroli is one of the few essential oils to be scientifically proven to increase serotonin production in the brain. As with all aromatherapy, however, the power of suggestion and individual preferences play an important part in how effective this might be. Serotonin is an important, mood-altering neurotransmitter, and increased levels of it enhance our feelings of serenity and well-being.

Coconut water; many things can be made from the coconut palm and practically all of the plant is used in some way. In Sanskrit, the name given is 'kalpa vriksha,' which means, 'tree that gives all that is necessary for living.' The revitalizing properties of organic coconut water are ideal for use on the skin, scalp and hair.

BIG shampoo uses mandarin oil to refresh the scalp and hair. Aromatherapists use mandarin oil as stress-relieving oil and a refreshing treatment for the skin.

I thought you’d also want to know that BIG contains Sodium laureth sulphate, something we are hearing about more and more in the media. SLS is a surface-active agent or surfactant. All surfactants are partly water-soluble and partly oil-soluble. It is this quality that allows oil and water, which normally don’t mix together, to become dispersed. Used at above minimum concentration, the surfactant molecules become organized in a structure that can trap oil-based dirt from hair, which allows the dirt to be rinsed away. Foam is not responsible for removing dirt, but it allows the hands to work the product through hair or across skin. This helps the mechanical removal of dirt. Sodium laureth sulphate is an opaque, thick liquid. Its consistency varies, depending on the concentration level. Sodium laureth sulphate gives thick rich foam and it cleanses the hair. Its thorough action dissolves dirt and grease effectively. When other ingredients - such as sea salt - are added, hair gains volume, body and shine. I’m not promoting that you use or don’t use products that contain SLS, but thought you’d be interested to understand why they are used.

I adored using BIG as it made my hair feel luscious and really buoyant. When you have a god hair day you feel a millions dollars – This products should be renamed ‘BIG Bucks’ instead!

How to create 'Cats Eyes'

After sweeping the catwalks, ‘Cats Eyes’ are going to be huge for Autumn Winter 2011.

Max Factor and celebrity makeup artist Caroline Barnes shows how to recreate the runway look too, - as she teaches at a master class with some of today’s biggest beauty vloggers (‘video bloggers’).

Here are some of the key tips I have pulled from the video:

  • Sweep the white shade across the first third of your eyelid into the corner of your eye and along the lash line.

  • Draw over the arch of your eye using the eye pencil, then soften with a cotton bud.

  • Apply the other eye pencil in black to define your bottom lashes.

  • Apply mascara from root to tip – sweep the inner lashes towards your nose and the outer lashes towards your hairline.

Holiday Hair

So I am back from my holiday after a week in the glorious sunshine and am now suffering from the holiday blues!

When I’ve been on previous summer holidays, I have found that my hair can go so dry from washing it everyday after going in the swimming pool and sea.  So this year I decided to purchase two products from the Charles Worthington ‘Takeaways Sunshine’ collection.

Just like your skin, sunshine dries out and damages hair, so you need to take care of your hair to keep it moisturized, hydrated and safe from the sun’s harmful UV rays.

The ultimate beach-bound Takeaways products, Charles Worthington Takeaways Sunshine has been expertly created to let you soak up as much sun as you like without worrying about your hair.
Enriched with moisturising rice protein and antioxidants from white tea, Sunshine gives thorough UV-Protection to keep the sun's harmful rays at bay, while infusing sun-parched hair with intense nourishment for a brilliant all-over shine. It washes away sea, sand and chlorine for an all over clean and fresh feel.

There are four products in the range; Shampoo, conditioner, Aftersun intensive shot and UV protection spray.  I used the Aftersun intensive shot and UV protection spray.

Takeaways Sunshine Aftersun Intensive Shot
This intensive cure, infused with moringa seed oil, high performing conditioning agents and serum smoothing actives, helps to rescue dry, damaged hair after a day under the rays. Hair is left revitalized, nourished and prepped, ready for another day in the sun.
I used this everyday after shampooing my hair and left it on about 3 minutes.

Takeaways UV Protection Spray
Providing essential sun protection for your hair, Sunshine Protection Spray is a dual-action product with hold and UV protection, designed to maximise shine and softness whilst safeguarding your hair’s colour and condition. This spray's unique anti-UV protect and repair system is designed to provide all the sun protection hair needs to stay strong, supple and super-glossy.

Created to give the optimum sun protection for hair, each product contains a preventative UV filter which guards your hair from harmful UV rays, and a moisturising rice protein to nourish the individual strands.  I sprayed this on my hair after I had washed it and then again the morning before heading down to the pool.

After 1 week in the sunshine, I have to say that my hair doesn’t feel damaged at all and with exactly the right amount of product for a two week holiday, they are the perfect additions to your beach bag.
